Note:
Swartz was a sculptor and printmaker who worked and taught in Los Angeles in the 1920's and 30's. The interlocking initials BK incised below the artist's signature most likely refer to Bryan-Knecht, collaborators at the California Art Bronze Foundry in Los Angeles. Dr. William Alanson Bryan was the prominent and influential director of the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art (now known separately as LACMA and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County) who worked with A. Knecht, a master castings expert on a number of projects through the foundry.
