Painted in April 1936, this watercolor is a study for a portrait of Maurice “Mickey” Leon, Jr. (1924-1989), illustrated on p. 10 of the April 1940 issue of American Artist magazine. Belcher painted several portraits of Mickey as well as his parents, Maurice Leon and Frances Juliana Webster Goodrich and sisters Elizabeth (Betty) and Francine.
