Note:
The subject refers to the artist himself (the feather) who rests upon the strength of his wife Yvonne (the stone). Jan Cox, a founding member of the 'Jeune Peinture Belge' group, was associated with CoBrA and published some of his artwork in the CoBrA magazine. From 1956-1974, Cox was the Head of the Painting Department at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His wife Yvonne was Head of Conservation at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. During his time in Boston, Cox was close friends with Perry Rathbone and Hanns Swarzenski, both of whose portraits he painted.
